A few songs for past modals

Here are a few songs that I found to highlight / introduce the past modals. Hopefully worksheets to follow when i have time.

Vincent - Don Maclean

A song about the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh by Don Maclean - used to introduce the topic of art. Also includes some art vocabulary!

A song about substitutes to be used with appearances, I also used it as an introduction to the idea of substitution in grammar.

A song which was used to introduce the idea of rapport (or lack of) with some older teens





Cultural note - University Challenge is an inter university quiz show from Britain which was fairly popular with the intellectuals in the 70's and 80's! and still running!

We used this to kick off the idea of beauty from the other side - some of the words are a bit strangled!




Not my favourite group or song but listenable!

Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer

This song was used to get young teens talking about addiction from a safe area. There are several references to the effects of addiction (most types) without mentioning the normal drugs/alcohol.



There are more modern versions but I think the original is still the best!

Protest songs - eve of destruction and where have all the flowers gone

I used this one as an introduction to the topic of opinions. The second one is less contentious/blunt




Sad but true - this song was written 50 years ago now, what has changed?

I used this song with a group of  teens to introduce and review the 2nd conditional. There are examples of both if clause first and main clause first. It is quite fast so may need an extra play!

I found this song by the Black Eyed Peas - it talks about a lot of the problems in the world today and will be used to kick off discussions with my teens on this topic. NB lots of words and quite fast but the kids will like it :)
