Another 2nd Conditional - If I were a carpenter

Found this while I was listening with my daughter, there are various versions on the internet but this seems to be the clearest.

A few songs for past modals

Here are a few songs that I found to highlight / introduce the past modals. Hopefully worksheets to follow when i have time.

As a follow up for Laura, whose mother is an art teacher - here is another song about an artist - Lowry

To introduce the ideas of rules and get students talking about rules.

Worksheet has the lines mixed up in verses and chorus

She's leaving home - Easy Star All-Stars

A grammar one at last - used to introduce the idea of participle clauses, a bit livelier than the Beatles but the lyrics are the same if you want to use the Beatles

Streets of London - Ralph McTell

Song used to discuss poverty

Substitute - The Who

A song about substitutes to be used with appearances, I also used it as an introduction to the idea of substitution in grammar.

My Perfect Cousin

A song which was used to introduce the idea of rapport (or lack of) with some older teens

Cultural note - University Challenge is an inter university quiz show from Britain which was fairly popular with the intellectuals in the 70's and 80's! and still running!

Ugly - Sugababes

We used this to kick off the idea of beauty from the other side - some of the words are a bit strangled!

Not my favourite group or song but listenable!

Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer

This song was used to get young teens talking about addiction from a safe area. There are several references to the effects of addiction (most types) without mentioning the normal drugs/alcohol.

There are more modern versions but I think the original is still the best!

Protest songs - eve of destruction and where have all the flowers gone

I used this one as an introduction to the topic of opinions. The second one is less contentious/blunt

Sad but true - this song was written 50 years ago now, what has changed?

You may also want to consider this one but it is a little long at nearly 6 minutes!

misunderstanding - genesis

A song to help with the idea of misunderstandings and mistakes

Tuesday, 15 April 2014

My Generation - The Who

Used as an introduction to the idea of the generation gap and similar.

Passive Modals - all you need is love

An oldie but a goodie with passive modal structure included, slow and good to sing too!

All you need is love -Beatles
 (Love, love, love) x 3
It's easy
Nothing you can say but you can learn to play the game
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
There's nothing you can do that can't be done

No one you can save that can't be saved
There's nothing you can make that can't be made
Nothing you can do but you can learn to be you in time
It's easy

Chorus
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
(Love, love, love) x 3
chorus
There's nothing you can know that isn't known
It's easy
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
Nothing you can see that isn't shown

chorus
All you need is love, all together now
All you need is love, everybody
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need

2nd Conditional - If I was a rich girl - Gloria Stefani

I used this song with a group of  teens to introduce and review the 2nd conditional. There are examples of both if clause first and main clause first. It is quite fast so may need an extra play!

If I was a rich girl – Gwen Stefani

Na na na na, na na, na na na na, na na (repeat)
Chorus
If I was a rich girl, na na, na na, na na,
na na na na, na na, na na na
See, I'd have all the money in the world
if I was a wealthy girl
No man could test me, impress me,
my cash flow would never ever end
'Cause I'd have all the money in the world
if I was a wealthy girl

Clean out Vivienne Westwood
I'd buy everything
Think what that money could bring
In my Galliano gown

My fancy house in London town
A Hollywood mansion if I could
No, I wouldn't just have one hood
Please book me first class to

All the riches, baby, won't mean anything
All the riches, baby, won't bring what your love can bring
All the riches, baby, won't mean anything
Don't need no other baby,
your lovin' is better than gold, and I know
Chorus
Love, Angel, Music, Baby, hurry up and come and save me
I'd dress them wicked, I'd give them names
Inspire me, and they'd come to my rescue
I'd get me four Harajuku girls to

All the riches, baby, won't mean anything
All the riches, baby, won't bring what your love can bring
All the riches, baby, won't mean anything
Don't need no other baby,
your lovin' is better than gold, and I know

Shouldn't matter, shouldn't matter, what?
What? It's all love, what? Give it up
Come together over the world
What? Shouldn't matter, shouldn't matter
From the hoods of Japan, Harajuku girls
 (repeat)

Original track and ting, mmm
What happened to my life? Turned upside down
Chicks that blew ya mind, ding, it's the second round
You know you can't buy these things, no

Now we ain't gettin' nothin' but love
I hope you can all keep up
Yes ma'am, we got the style that's wicked,
See Stefani and her L.A.M.B.
We climbed all the way from the bottom to the top
I rock the fetish, people, you know who I am

Chorus
Na na na na, na na, na na na na, na na (repeat)
The verses are mixed up but the choruses are in order

Where is the love - Global problems

I found this song by the Black Eyed Peas - it talks about a lot of the problems in the world today and will be used to kick off discussions with my teens on this topic. NB lots of words and quite fast but the kids will like it :)

It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world .......... ?
If love and peace is so ..........
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With the ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really ..........
So I can ask myself really what is goin' ..........
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin' in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy ..........
A war is goin' on but the reason's ..........
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
