Passive Modals - all you need is love

An oldie but a goodie with passive modal structure included, slow and good to sing too!

All you need is love -Beatles
 (Love, love, love) x 3
It's easy
Nothing you can say but you can learn to play the game
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
There's nothing you can do that can't be done

No one you can save that can't be saved
There's nothing you can make that can't be made
Nothing you can do but you can learn to be you in time
It's easy

Chorus
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
(Love, love, love) x 3
chorus
There's nothing you can know that isn't known
It's easy
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
Nothing you can see that isn't shown

chorus
All you need is love, all together now
All you need is love, everybody
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need

If it hadn't been for love - Adele

With this song I used it to talk about conditionals, I asked the students to tell me how many second conditionals there were and then looked at the mixed conditional. "I wouldn't be wishing I was free
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love"

NB you need to tell students that woulda = would have!

If it hadn’t been for love - Adele
Never would have hitch hiked to Birmingham
If it hadn't been for love
Never woulda caught the train to Louisiana
If it hadn't been for love

Never woulda run through the blindin' rain
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love
Without one dollar to my name

Woulda been gone like a wayward wind
If it hadn't been for love
If it hadn't been for love
Never woulda seen the trouble that I'm in

Nobody knows it better than me
I wouldn't be wishing I was free
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love

Lord have mercy on my soul
At least I know he's lying still
Four cold walls without patrol
Four cold walls against my will

If it hadn't been for love
Never woulda took a mind to track him down
Never woulda gone to that side of town
If it hadn't been for love

Never woulda loaded up a forty four
Put myself behind a jail house door
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love

Four cold walls against my will
At least I know he's lying still
Lord have mercy on my soul
Four cold walls without patrol

Never woulda hitch hiked to Birmingham
If it hadn't been for love
Never woulda caught the train to Louisian'
If it hadn't been for love

Never woulda loaded up a forty four
Put myself behind a jail house door
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love
If it hadn't been, if it hadn't been for love

What we really want - Rosanna Cash

I found this song to introduce the idea of cleft clauses with my higher level class. Having analysed the song we then went on to talk about other ways of emphasis.

What we really want – Rosanne Cash

We tried to make ourselves 1.........................
For something we've never 2.................
We threw the best parts of life 3..........................
On street talk, strangers and drugs
And what we really want is 4................
What we really need is 5................

I wanna call out your 6...................
I wanna hold out my 7...............
A woman silent in the mirror tonight
Wants to talk to your mirror man
And what they really want is love
And what they really need is love

We are ships in the 8...............
The water is deep in 9....................
There is reason and we can't find the light
So we sail off into our 10................
And what we really dream is love
And what we really need is love

What we want is love
What we need is love

We tried to make it feel  11...............
In someone else's world
We sat and looked out my window last 12..........
And knew that things had changed with this 13................
'Cause what I really found was 14..............
What we really need is love

What we really want is love
What we really need is love
What we want is love
What we need is love
